Honoring Our Own Opening Reception

  • Cary Saurage Community Arts Center 233 Saint Ferdinand Street Baton Rouge, LA, 70802 United States (map)

An exhibition of works by Charles Smith, who has continuously made powerful figural sculptures expressing aspects of the African American experience since 1986. Honoring Our Own: Dr. Charles Smith opens Oct. 24in the Shell Gallery at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center and remains on view through Dec. 31. The theme was chosen by Smith as a tribute to African Americans who have made significant cultural contributions to the country. The opening reception on Oct. 26 will take place at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center in the Shell Gallery and is free and open to the public.

As a former Marine veteran, ordained minister, social worker, community organizer, historian, educator, archivist, activist and orator, Smith uses the adopted title “Dr.” to communicate the level of wisdom he has garnered. His sculptures are not created for, nor directed to, the mainstream “art world” but rather gifts for his communities and those who encounters them. In transforming cast off objects from ordinary life into profound figural works, poignant expressions ranging from rage to joy, he seeks to right history, teach social justice and preach anti-racism.
