Festival of Lights kicks off holidays

Festival of Lights

Baton Rouge is fully in holiday mode after hundreds turned out for the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree Dec. 1. Mayor Sharon Weston Broome led the countdown to light up the 35-ft. tree in North Boulevard Town Square, which was followed by fireworks lighting up the skies of downtown and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus courtesy of the BR Fire Department. After reminding everyone to mind their Ps & Qs since he’s watching closely, WAFB’s Elizabeth Vowell, who served as emcee for the festivities, persuaded the jolly man to lead everyone in singing Jingle Bells.
The evening’s festivities also included performances by local school arts groups and choirs on the Community Stage, playing in the snow In Town Square, ice skating outside the Raising Cane’s River Center, hands-on activities at the Downtown Library and dancing to the sounds of the Soul Jukebox All-Star Band.
